A Quick Guide To Rainmaking

You’ve taken all the classes, criminal law, constitutional law, contract law and property law, walked the stage with honors, interned, clerked, passed the bar and got the new brief case.  The condo, boat and Porsche haven’t appeared yet, but soon.  That shingle looks great and your business cards are on the way.

What’s missing? CLIENTS!!  How do you get clients?  Aren’t they lined up waiting for your wisdom and sympathy (with their checkbook open)? Don’t they KNOW who you are?  No, frankly they don’t.   For all the great education you have received, they probably didn’t teach you the BUSINESS of practicing law.  Don’t worry, you’re not alone.  This isn’t even an industry specific obstacle.  Take the medical field for instance, doctors are notoriously absent of business skills and have to learn quickly, often the hard way. Free Tools for Time Tracking

This is not the first time we’ve talked about time tracking applications, but this time we will highlight FREE time tracking applications.  Tracking time is so critical to the revenue that lawyers make, that it might seem funny to talk about free products.  But the software world remains unique in that free products are often as good, if not even better, than products you pay for.

Part 4 in Our “Go Virtual With Law Clerk Connection” Series

Sitting in waiting rooms.  Sitting in traffic.  Sitting in airports.  Standing in line waiting. Waiting to pick up your kids from one of their myriad of activities.  In our modern world so much of our time is spent just waiting.

However, smart lawyers have hooked up with some new technology to put this down time waiting to full-time use.  Let me give you an example:

Sam is multi-tasking while driving, using his hands-free headset, and talks to a client, Nancy, to nail down the answers to three questions.  He gets all the answers he needs and finishes up his call.  But now he needs to remember to email a document to Mike, his virtual Law Clerk when he logs onto his laptop, and ask him to check on prior cases in a certain state, and he needs to remember to record his talk time for billing purposes. The economy may be in a recession, but that doesn’t mean that injustice is. Everyday, thousands of individuals are left without a voice because they do not have access to legal aid. Despite a recent influx of over $40 million in federal funding to legal aid providers, those providers are only able to assist approximately one-half of the eligible clients seeking their help.

Law Clerk Connection hopes to improve this dismal statistic by partnering with non-profit organizations, pro-bono attorneys and low/no-cost legal services attorneys. (more…)
